Your Ultimate HYROX Workout Guide

What exactly is a HYROX? And why is it so popular?

HYROX is a fast-growing international fitness competition that brings functional training and endurance sports together in one tightly organized race. The concept is simple but powerful: each participant completes 8 kilometers of running, alternating each kilometer with a functional workout.

The full race is designed to test athletes both physically and mentally. You work on strength, speed, endurance, mobility and perseverance, all within one challenging but manageable format.

What makes HYROX unique is that it is suitable for every level. There are divisions for beginners, recreational athletes, duos and elite athletes. Everyone starts with the same build-up, but you set your own pace, which makes it competitive and accessible.

But make no mistake: HYROX is tough. It’s a full-body wear-and-tear race, where your performance depends on technique, efficiency and well-thought-out preparation. If you want to stand out in speed or durability, it’s crucial that you train with focus, using professional equipment.

A thoughtful HYROX workout starts with choosing the right gear, and that’s where KrakenSport comes in. By training with quality tools such as weight vests, medicine balls, dumbbells and grip accessories, you not only increase your physical strength, but also your confidence on competition day.

The Best HYROX Workout (At Home or Gym)

1.Ski Erg – 1000m
The Ski Erg is a regular part of HYROX and a great way to get your heart rate up. If you don’t have a Ski Erg at home, you can use a rowing machine or assault bike.
Tip: Use the KRAKEN Gym grips for extra comfort and control, especially with sweaty hands.

2. Sled Push – 2 x 25m
No access to a sled? Use a weight vest from Kraken Sport and perform sled push alternatives such as sled drags or weighted bear crawls.
Tip: KRAKEN Gym grips and KRAKEN Wrist Wraps, for extra grip and support.

3. Sled Pull – 2x 25m
In this exercise, you pull a heavily loaded sled toward you using a rope. It requires brute strength from your back, shoulders, core and especially grip. If you don’t have a sled and rope, you can simulate this movement with heavy sled drags, battle ropes or even a partner exercise with resistance bands.
Tip: KRAKEN Wrist Wraps, for extra grip and support.

4. Burpee Broad Jumps – 80m
One of the most grueling sections. Here it’s all about explosiveness and perseverance. Try sets of 10 meters with short rest breaks.

5. Rowing – 1000m
The rowing machine is the perfect test of your endurance, technique and rhythm. During a HYROX race here, you want to row as efficiently as possible without losing too much energy.
Tip: KRAKEN Gym Grips, this will prevent blisters.
If you want to improve your rowing capacity, wear a weight vest to strengthen your core.

6. Farmers Carry – 200m
Grab a pair of heavy dumbbells or kettlebells. This section tests your grip strength and core stability.
Tip: KRAKEN Dumbbells, perfect for both beginners and advanced HYROX athletes.
Extra tip: KRAKEN Lifting Straps, support your grip during longer carries so your form doesn’t sacrifice fatigue.

7. Sandbag Lunges – 100m
Lunges with a heavy sandbag on your shoulders are an explosive test of your legs, balance and core. You have to cover 100 meters while repeatedly sinking deep. Train this also without sandbag, but with extra weight via vest or dumbbell.
Tip: Squat Dumbbells as a substitute for the sandbag.

8. Wall Balls – 100 reps
A classic HYROX. Throw the medicine ball against the wall and sink into a deep squat each time. Make sure you have the correct ball height. (3m for women, 3.60m tube for men).
Tip: KRAKEN Medicine ball, very durable and suitable for intensive wall ball workouts.

Running within HYROX: how to train and combine it with the workouts

In HYROX, you run 1 kilometer 8 times, each time right after a hard workout. That makes the running part harder than many people expect: you run with acidification, high heart rate and tired legs. That’s why it’s important not only to work on your running fitness, but also to train on switching between strength and cardio.

The best way? Combine your running sessions with functional exercises. For example, run 1 km and then do a sled push, burpees or lunges – and repeat. That way you learn to maintain your pace despite fatigue. As you progress, you can even simulate a full HYROX. You not only train your body, but also the mental ability to keep going when the going gets tough

Ready for the challenge?

HYROX is more than just a race – it’s a test of your strength, endurance, focus and discipline. The combination of running and functional workouts forces you to train smarter, not just harder. It requires structure, patience and the right mindset.

By practicing purposefully with attention to technique, recovery and transition between exercises. This is how you lay the foundation for a strong performance on race day. Whether you’re going for your first HYROX or aiming for a faster time: every workout counts.

Keep building, keep moving, and challenge yourself. The rest will follow naturally.
